| Abstract | World Health Organization. Within the framework for updating and revising the WHO Air Quality Guidelines for Europe, a meeting of the Working Group on "Classical" Air Pollutants was held at the National Institute of Public Health and Environmental Protection (RIVM) in Bilthoven, Netherlands, from 11 to 14 October 1994 to assess the health effects of exposure to carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, ozone/photooxidants, sulfur dioxide and particulate matter. The group consisted of 17 experts from 11 countries as well as 2 observers from 2 countries, a representative from the EC, and WHO staff. The group has discussed working papers prepared for the meeting and circulated in advance, and has derived, by consensus a set of recommended guideline values for the reviewed pollutants. No such value has been proposed for particulate matter; instead, estimates of health impacts related to various concentration of this type of pollution have been proposed. |
