Urinary heme precursors were analyzed to investigate hematopoietic function of 69 students of the blind and deaf school in central Taiwan, who suffered from polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) poisoning since spring 1979. There were 48 males and 21 females, and ages ranged from 7- 22 yr. Average amounts of urinary uroporphyrin, coproporphyrin, delta-aminolevulinic acid and porphobilinogen were 41.2306 mug/24 h. 30.1323 mug/24 h, 1.0015 mg/24 h and 0.3355 mg/24 h, respectively. Normal control values were 13.5688 mug/24 h, 35.2808 mug/24 h, 0.7155 mg/24 h and 0.3504 mg/24 h. Patients' urinary uroporphyrin and delta-aminolevulinic acid were higher than controls (P 0.01 and P 0.05), but urinary coproporphyrin and porphobilinogen show no significant difference. This type of urinary excreting pattern of heme precursors induced by PCB poisoning was different from those induced by As or Pb poisoning. It was helpful to analyze excretion pattern of urinary heme precursors for diagnosing patients of PCB poisoning.
