Abstract Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBP), decabromobiphenyloxide (DBBO), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), pentabromomethylbenzene (PBMD), pentabromoethylbenzene (PBEB), and the herbicide bromoxynil (BROM) were evaluated for toxicity to the marine unicellular algae, Skeletonema costatum, Thalassiosira pseudonana, and Chlorella sp. in six algal growth media. The highest concentration tested was the highest concentration at which crystals did not form. Growth media were prepared from natural seawater and from 5 commercial sea-salt formulations. EC50 (growth inhibition) values for most test substances varied with growth medium, with high EC50/lo
