Abstract The latest developments of the jet compression refrigeration and hybrid jet compression refrigeration systems are presented. From theoretical and experimental studies, their operating conditions and the coefficients of performance are given. Also, the importance of the working fluid in the performance of the system is emphasized in conjunction with the intercooler, which allows the use of two different refrigerants at a time in the jet and compressor subsystems. Searching appropriate refrigerants, some theoretical and experimental studies show the advantages of using R134a in these systems. However, the use of hydrocarbon refrigerants is proposed as a good option, although research and some safety procedures have to be developed before applying these ""nature friendly"" refrigerants.
